HOW THE CARRY GUY TRAINS

Expert Instruction

The Carry Guy Firearms Training Center can empower each student with the ability to safely handle and accurately shoot a firearm by implementing a comprehensive, structured training program that focuses on safety, fundamental skills, and ongoing practice. Here’s a step-by-step approach to achieving this goal:

1. Emphasize Safety Fundamentals

  • Safety Briefing: Begin every training session with a detailed safety briefing. Reinforce the four cardinal rules of firearm safety:
    1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
    2. Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
    4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

  • Safe Handling Techniques: Teach students how to safely load, unload, and check the status of a firearm. Emphasize muzzle awareness and finger discipline at all times.
  • Range Safety Procedures: Educate students on range commands, emergency procedures, and proper conduct to maintain a safe training environment.

2. Develop a Strong Foundation in Firearm Basics

  • Handgun Parts and Functions: Familiarize students with the parts of a handgun and their functions. Teach how to operate different types of firearms (e.g., semi-automatics, revolvers) safely.
  • Ammunition Knowledge: Educate students on types of ammunition, how to select the appropriate ammo for their firearm, and how to inspect for defects or damage.

3. Teach Proper Shooting Fundamentals

  • Stance and Grip: Instruct students on adopting a stable shooting stance (e.g., isosceles or Weaver) and a proper grip. A good stance and grip are critical for managing recoil and maintaining accuracy.
  • Sight Alignment and Sight Picture: Teach the importance of proper sight alignment (aligning the front and rear sights) and obtaining a clear sight picture (the relationship between the sights and the target).
  • Trigger Control: Focus on trigger discipline, including a smooth, controlled trigger press and the use of trigger reset for quicker follow-up shots.
  • Breathing and Follow-Through: Emphasize the role of controlled breathing in shooting accuracy and the importance of maintaining sight alignment through the shot.

4. Incorporate Dry Fire Practice

  • Dry Fire Drills: Use dry fire drills to allow students to practice safe handling, proper grip, trigger control, and sight alignment without live ammunition. This helps build muscle memory and confidence.
  • Immediate Feedback: Provide feedback during dry fire practice to correct form, grip, and trigger control issues before live fire training.

5. Progressive Live Fire Training

  • Start with Basic Drills: Begin live fire training with simple drills focused on accuracy and control at close distances. Encourage students to focus on fundamentals rather than speed.
  • Gradual Increase in Complexity: Progress to more challenging drills that include multiple targets, timed shooting, and movement while maintaining safety and accuracy.
  • Recoil Management Drills: Practice drills that involve shooting multiple rounds to help students learn to control recoil and maintain a steady shooting platform.

6. One-on-One Coaching and Personalized Feedback

  • Individual Attention: Provide one-on-one coaching to address individual needs and challenges. This helps students improve specific areas, such as grip adjustments or trigger technique.
  • Video Analysis: Use video recording to analyze shooting techniques and provide personalized feedback, allowing students to see their form and make necessary corrections.

7. Scenario-Based Training for Real-World Application

  • Realistic Scenarios: Conduct scenario-based training that simulates real-life defensive situations, such as home defense or concealed carry encounters. This helps students learn to apply fundamentals under stress.
  • Dynamic Drills: Incorporate drills that involve movement, shooting from cover, and engaging multiple targets to build situational awareness and adaptability.

8. Reinforce Safe Handling and Maintenance

  • Regular Safety Checks: Continuously reinforce the importance of safety checks and safe handling throughout the training program.
  • Firearm Maintenance: Teach students how to properly clean and maintain their firearms to ensure safe and reliable operation.

9. Encourage Ongoing Practice and Education

  • Practice Beyond the Classroom: Encourage students to continue practicing dry fire and live fire drills outside of structured classes to maintain and improve their skills.
  • Advanced Courses: Offer advanced courses and workshops to further develop shooting skills, introduce new techniques, and reinforce safe firearm handling practices.

10. Foster a Positive and Supportive Learning Environment

  • Encourage Questions and Participation: Create a supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in the learning process.
  • Promote Confidence Building: Provide positive reinforcement to build students’ confidence in their abilities to safely handle and accurately shoot a firearm.

By implementing this comprehensive training program, The Carry Guy Firearms Training Center can effectively teach students the skills necessary to safely handle and accurately shoot firearms, ensuring they are prepared and confident in their abilities.

WHY USE THE CARRY GUY?

JOIN OUR FIREARM COMMUNITY TODAY!

Enhance your shooting skills with our proven, step-by-step training programs. My name is Curtis Harwell, and I'm the Chief instructor for "The Carry Guy" Curtis Harwell LLC.  I'm a Certified NRA Instructor with over 30+ years of experience.  Additionally, I've attended NRA firearms training courses and  compete in pistol and rifle competitions which I use as resources to create my own technique of teaching that simply works for everyone and is very easy to learn and teach.

I feel that my very particularly intuitive technique is based upon my advanced training and understanding of basic physiological concepts related to handgun use.  This allows me to more easily convey to new and advanced shooters how to be safer and more effective firearm users.

With 30+ years of experience, I've developed an advanced ability to precisely analyze shooters and effectively communicate, in simple to understand terms, how to correct even the hardest to see issues, improving beginners to experienced shooters' techniques.  The NRA teaches what I will help you with.  You'll be very happy with and how we'll train you for success. The 3 main things that I'll give you is KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ATTITUDE.

I remember what being a new shooter was like and my technique is designed to help you surpass your shooting goals safely and effectively.

WHAT I DO

I currently instruct on Monday thru Sunday at The Carry Guy in Orangeburg, South Carolina.  My training for basic safety and firearms marksmanship and handgun handling takes about 2-hours to complete, 1-hour in the classroom and 1-hour on the range.

Together we will spend approximately 1-full hour in the classroom going over safety procedures, which I'm a stickler about. Next, I will show  you how to stand in the normal and modified isosceles shooting stance.  We'll then cover how to properly grip the gun, how to use the sights very precisely, and how to pull the trigger perfectly, doing all of these things at the same time.  We'll go on the range and shoot for approximately 1-hour, shooting 50-rounds, using your firearm(s) or mine.  If you need help selecting a firearm in the future, I'll help you.

Teaching the way I do is a matter of honor to me, because I put everything into ensuring that my students are prepared to return to the range on their own to practice to become as proficient as possible.  The goal is to train to be efficient and effective and increase the students' ability to survive potential deadly force encounters.  This is very serious stuff and I treat it that way, but in a non-intimidating and very helpful manner.  I too was new to this once and I remember being nervous, so I will help you through any and all nerves and apprehensions.  I truly believe that my system of training works very well, especially for brand new shooters and is both intuitive and rewarding.

You can count on me to do everything you need  to become safer and better prepared with your new firearm, and I hope and pray that you'll never need this training to save yourself or someone else.  It's important to have the KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ATTITUDE and never need them, rather than to need them and not have them.
