The Story Behind The Carry Guy
More Than Firearms. A Philosophy of Preparation
The Carry Guy was never created to teach people how to shoot. It was created to teach people how to think. For more than three decades, I have had the privilege of training thousands of men and women from every walk of life. Some came to earn their South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit. Others came to improve their skills, protect their families, or simply become more confident and responsible firearm owners. Over the years, I realized something important. The firearm was never the most important part of the training. The person holding it was. A firearm is only a tool. In the wrong hands, it can create tragedy. In responsible hands, it can preserve innocent life. The difference is not found in the firearm—it is found in the character, judgment, knowledge, and preparation of the individual. That realization became the foundation for everything I teach.
The Carry Guy was built on a simple belief:
Preparation is the highest form of personal responsibility.
Preparation is not about living in fear. It is about living with purpose. It is making the decision today to be ready for whatever tomorrow may bring. Whether the challenge is a violent encounter, a medical emergency, a natural disaster, or simply making the right decision under pressure, preparation gives us options. It gives us confidence. Most importantly, it gives us the opportunity to protect those who depend on us. That is why every class at The Carry Guy is built on four pillars:
Safety. Knowledge. Skill. Attitude.
These are not just words printed on a website. They are the standards that guide every lesson, every range exercise, and every conversation with every student who walks through our doors. Over time, those lessons grew into something larger than a training curriculum. They became a philosophy. A philosophy centered on awareness, sound judgment, disciplined training, unwavering integrity, and the preservation of innocent life. It is a philosophy captured in three simple words:
SEE • DECIDE • SURVIVE
See what others miss. Decide with wisdom before you act. Survive by relying on preparation, not luck.
This philosophy extends far beyond firearms. It applies to every area of life. Parents prepare for their children. First responders prepare for emergencies. Business owners prepare for uncertainty. Responsible citizens prepare because they understand that hope is never a substitute for readiness. My goal has never been to create the best firearms academy. My goal has always been to help build better people. If my students leave with more than improved marksmanship—if they leave with greater confidence, stronger character, better judgment, and a deeper commitment to protecting innocent life—then I have accomplished what I set out to do. That is the legacy I hope to leave. Not simply that I taught people how to shoot. But that I taught them how to think.
To live prepared.
To act responsibly.
And to preserve innocent life.
